The Experience of a New Rental Sales Representative

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Being in sales can be a job driven by a determined hunt for success. At CITY, it is still a hunt but one that’s driven by a team-first environment, inside an organization that cares for its people.

Because we are always looking for sales talent to take CITY to the next level we want to share what three of our newest sales representatives had to say about their CITY career.

We want to be able to share what a career with CITY really looks like
“The most rewarding for me is seeing your work help grow the company. That’s the most important for me.”
– Kenny Hatfield, Rental Sales Representative

“Being with CITY, it brings that local feel rather than just being a number,” Jason Trenkamp, one of CITY’s newest sales representatives said. “Every department works together and that makes us in sales more successful.”

Jason works out of CITY’s Des Moines location and has been in sales for several years. He enjoys being able to be his own boss and being able to make a difference for CITY and the team.  While many of his stops are what’s known as cold calls, Jason also benefits from the support of CITY’s management and marketing team. Before he gets out the door, he knows which accounts he is focused on and can make his own schedule for how he wants to approach the day.

“I love it because I am out knocking on doors and meeting new people all the time,” Jason said. “We are able to help businesses all across the area and even if they don’t want to do business with us now, we laid the cornerstone for a long-lasting partnership and that’s what we want.”

Being your own boss for Jason means hunting throughout the day, looking around for different businesses and deciding does he start on the left, or on the right side of the street. Because of the strong support around CITY’s sales staff, he knows he is going to be successful.

Jason considers his job almost like owning his own business within the business. He is able to run his own day-to-day by setting appointments the way he wants to. He believes in sales because you truly have the ability to make the day your own and harvest the fruits of your own labor.

At CITY, the building blocks are in place for you,” Jason said. “You are not on an island. There is no added pressure of having someone tell you, ‘You’ve got to do it this way.’ It gives you that flexibility.”

Kenny Hatfield worked in different industries across the Midwest. From being an account manager to working as a Route Service Representative, Kenny has now found his calling in sales and working for the customer. CITY’s strong desire to make sure he can be successful and Kenny’s drive to work for the customer motivates Kenny in his sales career.

He especially enjoys the training and instruction he gets from CITY’s sales management team.

“There is help to succeed,” Kenny said. “Sales is a challenging job but it’s also very rewarding and at CITY, you can count on the reward to come quickly because of the time and effort CITY invests in your career.”

Kenny realizes being your own boss and managing your own days has its challenges. He believes it takes tremendous motivation and dedication to be able to handle the No’s that come with being in sales. The challenge he’s found to most affect him is a positive one.  Sometimes, Kenny says, there is so much potential, but there is not enough time in the day. Sometimes he has to tell himself to go home and still say, “I did enough today, and that’s enough.”

Most importantly, however, Kenny enjoys being at CITY because of his co-workers and the culture he sees every day.

“The most rewarding for me is seeing your work help grow the company,” Kenny said. “That’s the most important for me.”

Dominic Musolino has always been interested in sales, and after college worked in several positions before coming to CITY. He worked in a classic office setting and just wasn’t happy.  Having found his calling in sales with CITY, he embraces the ability to work on his own terms.

“I get to wake up every day and be my own boss,” Dominic said. “You just have to make sure you hold yourself accountable because you make the rules.”

Dominic credits Minnesota Regional Manager Jay Rasmussen and CITY’s Sales Manager Chriss Carsello with his successful transition to sales in the laundry industry. He believes they do a great job of managing a team that understands the highs and lows of sales and what it’s like to be on the road by yourself.

Every day is different, and Dominic enjoys making every day a challenge. His relationship with CITY’s management helps him in making the right moves and leveraging his position in sales.

“Our management has done a great job of not micro-managing us. We have the freedom to do what we feel is right. At the same time, their guidance makes me be successful in my career. I don’t want to let them down because we have that relationship.”

Dominic is competitive and he is able to live his competitiveness by being part of CITY’s sales team. His advice to anyone wanting to work in sales is to not give up.  The cliché of 100 nos equals one yes is very much alive for him and risk versus reward is high.

“Stay the course,” Dominic said. “It’s your job and it’s part of the job and it will feel good in the end.”
